Taxi – Plying for Hire in Sunderland?

In the City of Sunderland only ‘White Hackney Carriages’ can be hailed in the street. A ‘Private Hire Vehicle’ (PHV) must be pre-booked from an office. Any driver of a PHV who accepts an unbooked customer, a flag down or queues in the street is committing an offence. This illegal activity is known as ‘Plying for Hire’.

    pity it didnt work …
pity it didnt work for you ihcos8. you try to make out you are not a hack driver but are plainly transparent

    it also says taxi …
it also says taxi drivers should not importune or have any one importune fares. thats exactly what the hacks are doing by sitting on unofficial ranks

    blackat was the …
blackat was the first to overstep the mark by acusing private hire of illegal picking up. in my own case i always phone private hire and when thier office is closed the call gets diverted to mobile so just because an office is closed doesn`t mean they are flimping

    Oh, my dear Siphoc …
Oh, my dear Siphoc I think you have seriously overstepped the mark here, incriminating individual drivers by giving their plate number! As far as I can see there has not been one instance of this so far? I sincerely hope that as of now, anyone and everyone refrains from answering your infantile comments.

    but the highest …
but the highest form of inteligence. remember private hire drivers go through the same police checks so in the same instance are no threat to society. I ask again if hacks pick up at an unofficial rank are they insured. Before you answer check the council website for rules regarding hack drivers

    no one has yet …
no one has yet written about hacks insurance when they pick up from illegal ranks. is it too much to ask for hack drivers to admit they are also working illegally. its about time thet covered the ranks and stopped camping out all over sunderland

  8. Thanks I think I …
Thanks I think I have plenty of wit.
PS. do you work for an insurance company as that is all you twist on about, as for flimp private hire or hack I’m sorry I’m none. I just like to see the petty squabbling where you seem more concerned about spelling, grammar or the way an article is read. If you were so concerned then why are you not pro active at sorting the problem out of uninsured taxi drivers instead of being a moaning minnie. By the way 262 and 67 use koochinis as a rank. didummz

  9. ….and “sarcasm is …
….and “sarcasm is the lowest form of wit” of that you have plenty! You say those that flimp will aquire a hack plate? you obviously speak from experience-you being one of them. At least you admit that hacks are insured and no threat to society contrary to the likes of yourself who illegally ply for hire and by doing so put the public at risk by transporting them around in uninsured cars. Do the decent private hire in sunderland a favour “grow up and shut up”.

  10. I’m sorry you …
I’m sorry you didn’t realise that if deregulation was to occur then there would be several options. One would be to deregulate the numbers (as in Newcastle) where hacks went from 339 to 780 in a 5 year period. All those that so called FLIMP would simply aquire a hack plate. Then they would be insured and no threat to society.
NEVER ARGUE WITH IDIOTS AS THEY WILL BEAT YOU WITH STUPIDITY AND TAKE YOU DOWN TO THEIR LEVEL.

  11. I think Siphoc …
I think Siphoc misinterprets the term ‘deregulation’? It wont create a one-tier system. There would still be private hire companies and still those that will illegally ply for hire, posing a risk to the public. As to what the Council should concentrate on, that is a matter for them. Enforcement of regulations, I would imagine is only part of their remit. Most important, I would have thought is the need to stop and prevent those that invalidate their insurance by illegally plying for hire.

  12. I’m sorry if you …
I’m sorry if you didn’t realise that deregulation would create a one tier system therefore there would be no illegally plying for hire and no risk to the public. As everyone should be insured. The council could concentrate making sure drivers conform to regulations and rid the streets of dangerous, uninsured and expired badged drivers. It would also remove bogus taxi drivers

  13. Unfortunately …
Unfortunately Sarrahpe I only get 500 characters to comment with, so, dont forget that a lot of people are well educated and choose their vocation regardless of education. If you did a little research like a good student you would find a TAXI driver won mastermind and a group of TAXI drivers won Britains brainiest. My own research found that the part of the brain that dealt with navigation can also stimulate the rest of the brain, making it more active. (university of California).

  14. I say Sarrahpe, you …
I say Sarrahpe, you are a bit tetchy. You did describe other drivers looked like ex bouncers, and would want to wrestle you. As for uni please stick in and Im sure you will manage to find a better job than we poor minions (like a call centre).
    P.S.
As a student Im surprised you can afford to use taxis

  15. Siphoc again, …
Siphoc again, misses the point. Any between private hire and hacks is unimportant. What is important is the prevention of putting the public at risk by allowing them to travel in uninsured cars. Regardless of the time it takes to stamp out illegally plying for hire by rogue, private hire drivers, it will never be ‘time wasted’. Even with deregulation there will still be private hire cars and unfortunately still those who illegally ply for hire.

  16. i must apologise i …
i must apologise i didnt realise my speling was so important im not realy computer literate and i thought that it was my comments that were more important.
Or is it a fact that I write things you don’t like. I for one would welcome deregulation. It would be the only way to stop the between private hire and hacks. The plus side would be less time wasted at the civic and they could concentrate on doing their own jobs properly.

    its easy enough to …
its easy enough to pick and choose when you decide to record a video and edit it. Its pretty obvious that he has kept away from chase, paddy whacks etc. As i said going around with blindfolds. the evidence was also sent to the echo with hacks parking on pelican crossings and outside koochinis still waiting for them to print them but got plenty more. and still waiting for reply from council about unofficial ranks that i asked for quite some time ago so i=are they in cahoots with the hacks ?

    @philsteel1954 I …
@philsteel1954 I cant see in the video any of the White hackney carriages parked anywhere? That philsteel1954 speaks of. I can only see private hire cars, which appear to be queuing in the street, plying for hire. The video seems to me to be self-explanatory. The evidence is there for all to see.

    how blinkered are …
how blinkered are you people. time and time again you write about private hire not being insured but fail to recognise that the hacks are picking up at unofficial ranks so if they are not official then they are not legal so is thier insurance valid or not ?. Hacks are parked all over town even in disabled bays on the sea front. Today I couldn`t get parked outside the chemist on Dundas St because of a hack parked there

  21. Siphoc how do you …
Siphoc how do you expect anyone to take you seriously? You cant even spell! It’s ‘REALISE’. Realisation is something you clearly lack. You obviously fail to understand anything clearly that is written in front of you. Never mind other peoples civic duty, what about your own. Do you think it’s right to condone illegally plying for hire? it’s blasé comments from the likes of yourself that give private hire companies a bad name and reputation.

  22. I f you really …
I f you really think I’m a flimper then I suggest you take enough evidence and report me to the authorities, if you are a law abiding citizen then I’m sure you will relies it is your civic duty.
    (no pun intended)

  23. The issue here is …
The issue here is not about “numbers” but about private hire drivers carrying out illegal acts I.E. illegally plying for hire. They are aware of the consequences yet still do it knowingly, invalidating their insurance and putting the public at risk. Anything which is unlawful will be looked upon with disdain by any normal law abiding person. Siphoc appears unable to grasp this concept probably due to the fact that he himself is possibly a flimper.and involved in the illegal trade?

  24. if its such a big …
if its such a big issue why don’t they just deregulate and then the civic solves their headache and don’t have to listen to taxi drivers moaning all the time. I’m sure it will only kill the taxi trade for approx. 2 years as it did in other citys

  25. I would agree with …
I would agree with Didummz figures flimping in Sunderland is probably 3-4 times the amount given by Deebator. The truth is much of it goes on long after the Civic are tucked up in bed knocking out the Z’s. Flimpers have even started waiting in Green Terrace opposite Fitzy’s in the early hours. Like I said before they’ll keep doing it. By the laws of probability a member of the public will be hurt, it’s just a matter of time and then maybe more will be done to prevent illegally plying for hire.
