Taxi Insurance – No Damage To Either Vehicle, Likely Insurance Outcome?

A couple of weeks ago I was in a give-way/merging lane to turn left onto a 40mph dual carriageway. The junction just before the merge is traffic light controlled, so it is clear when there is no oncoming traffic. There was a minivan taxi in front of me, he made to move off and, seeing no traffic, I went to follow.

The taxi driver had in fact slowed, so I rolled into the back of him. We were both moving slowly, so although there was a bit of a bang, there wasn’t so much as a scratch on either car. At the time I was being followed by a mechanic from the AA, as we were getting my car to the garage (he had temporarily fixed the problem, but was following in case I broke down).

So anyway, the guy from the AA also pulled over and got out to look at the cars – we all agreed no damage, but exchanged insurance details as a courtesy. The taxi driver was fairly rude, initially implying I had no insurance, which of course I did. I went away expecting to hear nothing more, as like I said there was not even a scratch, which the other driver agreed.

However, a few days later I receive a notice from the police saying prosecution proceedings are being started against me for careless driving, then my insurance company got in touch to say the driver was claiming for damages, and then as a final blow today the insurance company contacted me to say the driver is claiming injuries for his passenger.

I have told the insurance company there was no damage, and have a statement from the AA employee confirming this (he also says he thinks it’s the taxi drivers fault for slowing for no reason). What is the likely outcome of this? I cannot afford an insurance increase, and I most definitely cannot afford a fine for careless driving.

It feels unfair and as though the other driver is simply out for anything he can get? Any thoughts would be welcome as it makes me feel a bit sick :( Try to deal it out of pocket, otherwise insurance rates will go up much more. You can check how quotes will change here – autoinsurance.bebto.com

  1. You need to followup with the police dept about the allegations of careless driving. I don’t think there is a basis for that and prosecution is unlikely. As far as the injury claims go,you need your insurance company to take care of that as you have no way of disproving any injuries only lack of damage which was verified by the witness from AA. Depending on the out come of the insurance investigation you may or may not get a premium increase.
