Why would an auto insurance company request money back from the hospital?

In October I was in an auto accident that was not my fault, the responsible party didn’t have insurance but I did including personal injury. My daughter had minor neck injuries and I took her to the hospital. The charges were approved and paid. This week a bill collector called and said the insurance company requested the money back and would tell me nothing more, they told me to call my insurance company (who I cant reach right now) why would this happen?

  1. It would happen, if you were paid under your uninsured motorist section, AND your health insurance.

    You cannot double dip.

It would also happen, if your insurance was actually cancelled.

But besides those two scenarios, I have no idea – you’ll have to wait until Monday to call and ask.

Bill collectors rarely tell the truth on the phone. If what the bill collector was saying was true, you should have been told in writing, by mail, before receiving any collection calls. There are many possible reasons why you might have received this call; the insurance company having requested money back from the hospital is neither the only possible reason nor the most likely reason.

  3. ~~They have somehow gotten the idea you were reimbursed for the medical costs through your auto insurance or the other driver. If you did not receive any (for sure you know the at fault party did not cover), then they will have to cover you. It would just be a paperwork error along the line. Call your insurance company Monday and tell them what really happened and they should repay the hospital.

Keep good notes on who and when you spoke with and if it were me I would ask for a supervisor. Otherwise if they take too long you could end up in collections if you don’t cover the charges.~~

  4. WHAT insurance "paid"? Your auto insurer or your health insurer?
