  1. You could go to an independent insurance broker that represents multiple companies and he can give you comparison quotes. I personally would recommend getting coverage from one of the larger companies such as State Farm, Farmers or Allstate.

  2. No, they are not.

The PURPOSE of most of those sites, is to either harvest your personal information to sell as leads to agents, or to steer you to ONE particular company’s website – that’s paying the comparison place to put their rate as lowest.

Additionally, those rates aren’t UNDERWRITTEN, they’re just best case scenario rates. So when you go to actually BUY that coverage, you find out that you’ll have hundreds of agents calling the number you put in trying to sell you THEIR policy, or the RATE changes on you.

Your best bet, is to talk to a local agent – local to you. And if you go to a local INDEPENDENT agent, they’ll represent lots of different companies, and can give you a comparison quote. Call 3-4 different agents in your area.

There’s no short cut. To find the cheapest rates for you, you have to shop around.

  3. MBR Catz missed one important things: A few companies are not represented by any local agents. There are only some companies whose quotes the local agents can get. There are a few companies that give out quotes only if you go on the companies own website (not a comparison site, with one exception: you can get Progressive quotes on Progressive’s comparison site) or call the company (not a local agent) on the phone.

The online comparison sites obviously are not reliable when it comes to following the Yahoo! Answers Community Guidelines. They have posted three spam answers already to this question already.
